Grocery Shopping

As much as I loved our coffee meets
There were just too many had.
Then you got so busy. You had shopping to do.
I asked Can I come with you?
I don't mind pushing trolleys.

We strolled down the aisles,
Got some treats for your puppy
Panty hose for office work
Some cereal for the morning

As you reached up for the brunch bars
I whispered Jesus loves you
I do too

I remember the first time we met.
I was so nervous.
I washed my hair with new shampoo
Conditioned it too, so smooth.

You picked the place, I followed
Your manner so unflawed.
With practised lips you ordered things
I watched in nestled awe.

Maybe I assumed too much.
Would your love overlook the mess
Of untamed hair? my dry skin? and unclipped nails?
Or my choosing to wear the daggy shoes instead of the pretty ones
because my feet were sore?

Don't get me wrong,
my efforts to groom myself for you
were not in vain but love,
but after a time

I wanted to relax
and just do life with you.

Where is your laundry basket?
I'll put the powder in.
The machine will work for us.
I'll feed your dog when he barks

And take out the rubbish.
I'll separate waste and recyclables
In red and yellow, greens in green
because minutes love the chores

and the chores demand our doing
and deeds require love behind
the smiles I give to you.
